Meet on ocean technology from today

Our Bureau

Chennai , Dec. 9

THE latest developments and skills in ocean technology that have made India a world leader in this sphere will be on show at a conference commencing here on Wednesday.

The international conference on coastal and ocean technology is being organised by the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), the technical arm of the Department of Ocean Development.

The three-day conference between December 10 and 12 will deal with technologies such as underwater vehicles, modelling of coastal environment and gas hydrates— considered a potential fuel source. Over 200 scientists from national and international organisations will be participating in the conference.

Also on show will be some of the latest equipment developed by the institute including an underwater crawler, indigenously developed data buoys that help scientists collect data on conditions in the ocean, which have an impact on weather, and equipment from other countries.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Dr Harsh K. Gupta, Secretary, Department of Ocean Development, said that India was developing ocean survey and research equipment indigenously, and their performance matched the best in the world.

For instance, the data buoy developed by the institute costs just half that of an imported buoy, which costs about Rs 50 lakh.
