Green marble, soap stone quarrying stopped

Our Bureau

Mumbai , Dec.12

THE production of internationally famous green marble and stones have come to a halt due to closure of mines located in Kherwada Tehsil (Udaipur) of Rajasthan, according to Rajasthan Khanij Udyog Mahasangh.

The 226 green marble and 49 soap stone mines are closed from September 6, 2003 due to the Rajasthan High Court judgment for dumping the waste materials and creating air/water pollution. Exports of green marble from the country were around Rs 400 crore in the last three months. India exports green marbles to Italy, US and gulf countries.

As a result of this closure, many big marble mining and processing companies, such as Madhav Marbles, Pacific Marbles and Durga Marbles, will be in trouble.
