Spices & Condiments Decline continues in pepper exports Our Bureau
Mumbai , Dec. 12 OVERALL export of pepper continued to decline in October 2003 compared to the same period in 2002. However, exports were more when compared to September 2003, according to the latest figures released by the Jakarta-based International Pepper Community. Exports from Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam and Sri Lanka decreased, while exports from India and Indonesia increased. The six major exporting/producing countries together exported around 21,323 tonnes in October 2003 (85 per cent black and 15 per cent white) against 23,152 tonnes in October 2002, showing a decrease of 8 per cent. However, compared to September 2003exports increased by around 26 per cent. During January-October 2003 total pepper export was 14,300 tonnes against 18,250 tonnes during the same period last year, a significant decline of 22 per cent. Exports from Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam and Sri Lanka fell by 10 per cent from 182,086 tonnes to 164,321 tonnes in January-October 2003. Brazil was a main source for pepper during the month of October as the harvesting season there has begun. During October 2003, Brazil exported a sizeable quantity, around 6,770 tonnes of pepper valued at $10.1 million. Compared to September 2003, exports increased by 49 per cent from 4,554 tonnes to 6,770 tonnes. This is less by 5 per cent compared to exports in October 2002. Total export from Brazil during the 10-months period amounted to 24,356 tonnes, registering a decrease of 5 per cent from 25,538 tonnes in the same period last year.Vietnam exported 4,478 tonnes of pepper in October 2003 against 6,011 tonnes in October 2002, registering a decrease of 26 per cent. Compared to exports in September 2003, however, exports increased by 2,118 tonnes. During the 10-months period of 2003, the country exported 64,223 tonnes. Out of the total export, around 3,000 tonnes was white pepper.
