Foreign Trade Australia keen to raise food products export to India Our Bureau
Kolkata , Dec. 14 AUSTRALIA is upbeat on the prospects of increased export of food products and beverages to India. On an average, Australia exports $150 million worth of food products and beverages to India every year. In turn, India exports $40 million worth of food products to Australia every year. Stating this at a news conference held here shortly before the unveiling of a "Western Australian Food & Beverage Showcase" recently, Mr Peter Kane, Senior Trade Commissioner of the Australian Trade Commission, said the retail boom and expansion of the supermarkets network in India would facilitate increased imports of Australian food products and beverages. Mr Kane said that a team from the Kolkata-based S.R. Trading Company was in Western Australia recently and has forged tie-ups with companies there for sourcing of select wines, olive oils, packaged meats, cheese, chocolates, cakes, fruit juices, yoghurts, health drinks and non-alcoholic beverages. The Australian companies with whom the tie-ups had been firmed up include Evans & Tate, Selwyn Wine Services, D'orsogna Ltd, Manassen Foods and Harvey Fresh, among others. He said the tie-ups had been facilitated by the Australian Trade Commission, the Department of Agriculture of the Government of Western Australia and the Western Australian Trade Office in India. According to Mr Ambarish Singh Roy, CEO of S.R. Trading Co., the range of products has been test-marketed and the response has been encouraging. Besides institutional sales to hotels and clubs, these products would be sold through retail networks at different levels. Already, a major hotel chain has committed itself to buying half-a-container of these products every month.
