Manish Malhotra

Chennai , Dec. 15

FASHION designer Manish Malhotra, whose clothes have kept Bollywood's leading ladies in tune with the times, says he is very "comfortable with women" — even with their tantrums.

With the spotlight on him, Malhotra talked to members of the Duchess Club about how he became Bollywood's favourite designer despite no formal training in fashion designing.

He said he could not go to fashion designing schools abroad and the ones in India "are not good enough," so he decided to learn on the job.

He was 25 years old when he started designing — for Juhi Chawla in Swarg.

His designs brought in the much-needed style into Hindi films and revolutionised the fashion scene by giving the character a "look."

Malhotra has designed for most leading actresses in the industry, including Sridevi, Urmila Matondkar, Karisma Kapoor, Kajol, Raveena Tandon, Manisha Koirala, Madhuri Dixit, Twinkle Khanna, Aishwarya Rai, Rani Mukerjee and Preity Zinta.

His big moment came with Urmila Matondkar's new-look in Rangeela. He was then to do a repeat for Karisma Kapoor in Raja Hindustani.

Malhotra has also designed for Michael Jackson and Naomi Campbell.

He has been awarded the Filmfare Award for Costumes Design and also named Most Stylish Designer of the Year at the Elle Style Awards 1999.
