Railways SW Railway posts 11 pc rise in freight revenue Our Bureau
Bangalore , Dec. 15 THE South Western Railway has posted a nearly 11 per cent increase in revenues from freight during the first half of the current fiscal. According to a statement issued by the South Western Railway, the freight earnings between April and October 2003 was Rs 469.45 crore, an increase of 10.58 per cent over the corresponding period last year. The passenger earnings during the first half rose 8.45 per cent to Rs 271.52 crore. The SW Railway which was formed on April 1, 2003, with headquarters in Hubli, saw the number of passengers increasing to 4.31 crore during the April-October period compared with 4.03 crore during the corresponding period last year. The freight loading up to October 2003 was 14.05 million tonnes compared with 11.03 mt during the corresponding period last year. The statement said new stations were opened to cater to the needs of freight customers. These include, Amargol and Ugarkhurd stations in Hubli; Sakleshpur, Bageshpura and Challekere stations in Mysore division; and Malur station in Bangalore division. The SW Railways is also planning to relocate goods shed to Navalur from Hubli. The statement said vigorous marketing drive lead to bagging transportation contract of bauxite and timber waste. Timber waste is transported from Challekere to Ambevadi and bauxite from Desur to Renukut. The SW Railway has already opened three new passenger reservation system centres at Hindupur, Koppal and Kengeri. The New reservation centres at Haveri, Bagalkot, Chitradurga, Chamarajnagar, Madikeri, Challekerea and Bijapur city have been sanctioned. It ran 66 passenger special trains during summer and festival season and 371 more coaches were added to the existing trains to clear the increase in passenger traffic. The statement said the punctuality of passenger trains on SW Railway rose to 98 per cent. The operating ratio of the SW Railway was 75 per cent.
