Courts/Legal Issues AP High Court stays proceedings in liquor tender case Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Dec. 15 THE Andhra Pradesh High Court on Monday suspended all further proceedings in the Rs 550-crore liquor scam, wherein a Special Court had directed the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) to investigate allegations of corrupt practices in finalising liquor supply tenders by the Andhra Pradesh Beverages Corporation Ltd (APBCL). Mr Justice C.Y. Somayajulu of the AP High Court, has directed suspension of the proceedings in which allegations were made against 18 persons including the Chief Minister, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, some senior cabinet colleagues and senior officials. The Principal Special Judge for Special Police Establishment and Anti-Corruption Bureau, Hyderabad, earlier this month, on a complaint filed by Mr N. Krishna Kumar Goud, named the Chief Minister as the first accused and Mr Tummala Nageswara Rao, as the second accused, along with former Chief Secretary and former Revenue Secretary. The complainant had contended that an amount of Rs 550 crore was siphoned off while procuring liquor by the AP Beverages Corporation. The Corporation, a nodal agency for liquor procurement, had invited various manufacturers through tenders for the purchase of liquor. Aggrieved by the orders of the lower court, the State Minister, Mr Tummala Nageswara Rao, and former Managing Director of APBCL, Mr Veerabhadraiah, filed a petition in the High Court seeking a directive to quash the proceedings. The counsel for petitioners, Mr C. Padmanabha Reddy, argued that the special judge for ACB does not have the power to entertain private complaints like a regular magistrate. Earlier, a writ petition seeking CBI probe was dismissed and the contents in the present complaint are no different. The matter will be taken up for further hearing on Tuesday.
