Kolkata , Dec. 15

WIPRO is commissioning its Software Development and Call Centres here on February 1 next year.

This was informed by Dr G.D. Gautama, the Principal Secretary of the West Bengal department of information and technology, here on Monday at a two-day seminar on "Role of service and allied sectors in the eastern region," organised by the Bengal Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

Speaking to newspersons, Dr Gautama said the Wipro centres would employ around 500 personnel. He, however, added that Infosys, which was planning to set up shop in the city, had postponed it for the time being.

The US insurance major AIG is setting up its back-office operations here. Atlas Medicine, another US company, is also locating its off-shore development centre, first such in South Asia, here. Satyam Infoway is also coming to city shortly, he informed. According to Mr Bhaskar Pramanik, the managing director of Sun Microsystems (India), his company has no plans to come to the East. However, it will shortly recruit 300 software hands for its Bangalore base.

Mr Sridhar Iyengar, President of TiE, a Silicon Valley association for promoting start-ups in Asia, said that around 20 venture capitalists from US would visit India in February next to assess the BPO scenario. They will visit Mumbai, Dehi, Bangalore and Hyderabad. "Entrepreneurs from other parts of the country will also be able to make presentations to the VCs in any of these cities," he added.
