Kerala to have world's first-ever floating ATM

G.K. Nair

Kochi , Dec. 15

KERALA has almost all banks both nationalised and private competing with each other for providing more and more value-added services. The latest in this series is going to be a floating ATM (automated teller machine), first of its kind in India and perhaps in the world.

The State Bank of India would be launching the first-ever floating ATM here soon. The boat, which will be fitted with the ATM is in the final stages of completion and would become operational soon, according to sources.

It will be floating and berthing at jetties near hotels and places of worship, where functions, festivals and ceremonies are held. Several luxury hotels here are located at waterfront apart from a number of places of worship, which conduct annual festivals, attracting a large number of people.

Floating CDMA technology would be used for keeping the ATM operational. Adequate security would be provided on board for the machine, the sources said.

At present a floating ATM is operational in the Princess Elizabeth, the world's largest passenger cruiser, but that is along with a bank branch aboard. Therefore, this would be the first floating ATM in the world, claimed the sources.
