Letters Anti-Defection Bill
The recent unanimous passing by the Lok Sabha of the Constitution Amendment Bill to debar a defector from holding any public office is welcome, but also needs to be viewed with caution. If all politicians agree to do something unanimously, one should suspect that, prima facie, there is some catch somewhere. The Anti Defection Bill is not going to achieve anything, as politicians know how to find the loopholes in it. What about independents, who can act on their own? Does the Bill also cover them? What about coalition parties? If some of them decide en masse to quit one coalition and form another, will it be called defection? The Anti Defection law is an anachronism and should be repealed immediately. V. S. Venkatavaradan Salem Letters to the editor and contributions can be sent by e-mail to: bleditor@thehindu.co.in
