Call for basic changes in tapping of rubber

THE Rubber Board has called for basic changes in tapping rubber.

" Basic changes are necessary in the exploitation systems of rubber", Mr S.M. Desalphine, Chairman, Rubber Board told the agricultural scientists. "The tapping system evolved more than 100 years ago is still practised in all rubber-producing countries. More research is required in this field, he advised the scientists. "

Mr Desalphine was inaugurating a four-day international workshop on Exploitation Technology at the Rubber Research Institute of India, Kottayam. He also released a bibliography on Exploitation Technology.

The international four-day workshop from Monday on Exploitation Technology is held under the auspices of International Rubber Research and Development Board and hosted by Rubber Board. Scientists from Malaysia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Philippines and France will present papers at the workshop.

The inaugural session was presided over by Dr N.M. Mathew, Director, Rubber Research Institute of India. Mr S.Ramachandran, Member, Rubber Board, Dr A.K. Krishnakumar, Rubber Production Commissioner, Dr K.R. Vijayakumar, Jt. Director of RRII and the Liaison Officer of the International Group formed for Exploitation Studies and Dr K.U. Thomas spoke on the occasion. Dr Abdul Asis, Secretary General of International Rubber Research and Development Board delivered the keynote address.

Meanwhile, the Kottayam rubber market remained closed on Tuesday on account of a hartal declared by a political party.
