Infrastructure Thiruvananthapuram to get facelift Our Bureau
Thiruvananthapuram , Dec. 16 THE Thiruvananthapuram Corporation has unveiled a comprehensive plan intended to give the city a facelift while augmenting the facilities available in certain areas. At a meeting held in the city on December 15, the Mayor, Ms J. Chandra, announced that a sum of Rs 8.7 crore would be spent on four projects as part of this initiative. Financial support would be provided by the Department of Tourism and also by the Kerala Government's Capital Region Development Scheme. Areas identified for beautification include the Shanghumughom beach, the Putherikandam maidan and the Manaveeyam Veedhi near the Vellayambalam junction. Also a part of this development initiative is the proposal to modernise the crematorium in the city's Thycaud locality. The project to develop the Manaveeyam Veedhi, which connects two of the cities arterial roads, has been conceived with the intention of turning it into a street venue for cultural performances, especially on weekends. The idea is to close this road to vehicular traffic on weekends and turn it into an open-air performing area. The Corporation is also planning to build a glass canopy along one of the pavements of this road and turn this area into a venue for exhibitions. Construction of a central pedestrian zone and a jogging track, extensive landscaping and creation of a special play area for children are some of the measures that are part of the project to develop Shanghumughom beach. The investment in this project is expected to be around Rs 3 crore, the Mayor said. Development of the Putherikandam maidan in the central business district of the city is another project the Corporation is embarking on. Construction of an open-air theatre, planting of trees and revamping the areas surrounding the maidan are other measures that form part of this project. The Corporation is also initiating a Rs 2.6-crore plan to develop the Thycaud crematorium. Modernising the crematorium and landscaping its environs are some features of this initiative.
