THE Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has projected a revenue deficit of Rs 882 crore in 2004-05.
The board has decided to submit a revenue statement to the State Electricity Regulatory Commission showing an income of Rs 2,836 crore and an expenditure of Rs 3,718 crore during the next fiscal. The income has been calculated on the basis of the existing power tariff.
It may be recalled that the State Government had decided to extend reliefs to the tune of Rs 557.6 crore, including a subsidy of Rs 200 crore, for the current year. This had helped avert an imminent increase in the tariffs in the State.
The deficit projected for the next financial year points to another round of protracted bargaining exercise between the board and the Government, if the latter wants to keep the tariffs where they are. The Government will be forced to part with more concessions and another dose of subsidy to achieve this, say observers.
The board, at its meeting on Monday, has also cleared the proposal for purchase of enough computers for the computerisation of those areas which have been brought under the Accelerated Power Development and Reforms Programme. Also, the board will earmark 15 acres of its land to Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd to expedite the establishment of a 400-KV substation at Kozhikode.
