FM assures support to hardware sector

New Delhi , Dec. 16

THE Finance Minister, Mr Jaswant Singh, on Tuesday assured the hardware industry that the Government would take all possible steps to ensure the growth of the domestic IT market and the sector.

At a meeting with representatives of the e industry, Mr Singh said, "There is no good in India being in the forefront in software and a laggard in hardware. India has to attain global presence and competence in the hardware sector as it is critical for national competitiveness," the Minister remarked, according to a statement from the Manufacturers Association for Information Technology .

Industry leaders from HCL, Intel, IBM and Wipro called on the Finance Minister to take up the issues the hardware industry is facing. Computer makers are demanding a cut in excise and other duties to bring prices down and propel growth.
