Climate & Weather Rain plays havoc in AP coastal districts Our Bureau

Visakhapatnam , Dec. 16 HEAVY rains caused by the cyclone in the Bay of Bengal disrupted normal life in the coastal Andhra Pradesh districts from Nellore to Srikakulam. The south-coastal districts were the worst-hit. The cyclone crossed the coast near Machilipatnam, the port town and the district headquarters of Krishna district, on Monday night (midnight) and weakened further. According to reports, the cyclone claimed more than 10 lives so far, most of them in Krishna district, and nine fishermen from Uppada village near Kakinada in East Godavari district were reported missing. Low-lying areas were inundated in Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam, West Godavari, East Godavari and Nellore districts. Paddy crop in the western Krishna delta was hit, according to officials. Paddy crop in more than 1 lakh acres in Krishna and Guntur districts may have been affected, according to preliminary estimates. Port operations were suspended at Kakinada from Monday morning and the rains affected the operations to an extent in Visakhapatnam port too. According to a bulletin issued by the Cyclone Warning Centre Director, Mr J.V.M Naidu, here on Tuesday evening, the cyclone turned into a deep depression and further weakened into a low pressure area, lying 100 km west of Visakhapatnam. It was moving in a north-westerly direction and under influence the north-coastal districts may receive rainfall (moderate to heavy) till Wednesday afternoon. Repalle in Guntur district received the highest rainfall (19 cm) till Tuesday morning, followed by Machilipatnam (15 cm).
