Mumbai , Dec. 17

STEEL Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) has reported a 15 per cent increase in domestic steel sales at 1.68 million tonnes during October and November 2003 in comparison to 1.46 million tonnes sold in the same period previous year.

With this, SAIL's cumulative domestic sales of saleable steel in April-November 2003 touched 5.8 million tonnes, showing a growth of 6 per cent over the year-ago period.

During the first eight months of the current financial year, SAIL has had good sales in both long and flat products. The company sold 2.2 million tonnes of long products (up by 5.5 per cent from the year-ago period) and 3.3 million tonnes of flat products, higher by 6.5 per cent from the year-ago period. The products, which witnessed good sales, were plates, tubes and pipes, reflecting higher demand from construction projects and infrastructure sectors, the company said in a news release.

The company said it has adopted measures to meet demand requirements of the domestic market by catering to the end user needs in terms of quality, size and timely deliveries. "In order to continue with its success in meeting the exacting demands of the customers, SAIL is also reinforcing measures to re-orient its product mix to suit the market requirements,'' the release said.

Much of SAIL's demand is in the northern and southern regions.
