New Delhi , Dec. 17

BHARAT Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) has secured major contracts cumulatively worth over Rs 2,700 crore from National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) for setting up three projects with a combined power generating capacity of 1710 MW.

The three projects are the Sipat super thermal power project (STPP) stage-II (2x500 MW), the Kahalgaon STPP stage-II phase-II (1x500 MW) and the Feroze Gandhi Unchahar thermal power project stage-III (1x210 MW).

These contracts, according to a BHEL press statement here, will go a long way in augmenting the country's capacity addition programme in the Tenth Plan.

This is the first time that NTPC has awarded such a large number of contracts to BHEL in a single month. Of these, the four contracts (two packages each) for Sipat and Kahalgaon STPP have been received against international competitive bidding.

BHEL's scope of work in these contracts envisages manufacture, supply, erection, testing and commissioning of steam turbines, generators, boilers, associated auxiliaries, balance of plant and electricals, besides modern controls & instrumentation (C&I), electrostatic precipitators (ESPs) and switchyard (only for the Unchahar project).

The turbine generators and boilers are to be manufactured at BHEL's Haridwar and Tiruchi plants respectively, while the C&I system will be supplied by its electronics division at Bangalore.

Its Hyderabad plant will manufacture the coal mills and boiler feed pumps while the electricals and switchyard equipment will be supplied by Bhopal and Jhansi plants. Its plant at Ranipet will manufacture and supply the ESPs, the statement said.

For NTPC, BHEL is currently executing contracts at Kahalgaon STPP (1,000 MW) in Bihar, Vindhyachal STPP (1,000 MW) in Madhya Pradesh, Talcher STPP (2,000 MW) in Orissa, Rihand STPP (1,000 MW) in Uttar Pradesh and Ramagundam STPP (500 MW) in Andhra Pradesh.
