Democracy and development

This is with reference to "Democracy and Development: Contradictory in terms?"(Business line, December 20). Democracy and development are essentially complimentary though they contradict each other occasionally.

The politicians who neglect infrastructure development and social change should learn from the recent Assembly elections, where the public out rightly rejected all other issues save the developmental ones.

The masses give paramount importance to developmental steps taken by politicians.

Instant offers and benefits on the eve of elections have lost their coaxing ability, thanks to the literary transformation happening in the country.

As the article rightly pointed out, the onus of seeing to that democracy and development go hand in hand lies with the people.

Whom they elect is what really matters most. Neither the policies nor the system can really come in the way of a real leader.
