IIM Lucknow institutes leadership awards

New Delhi , Dec. 23

YOU may dub this as just another set of awards for recognising "leadership". But the persons behind the "Lakshmipat Singhania-IIML National Leadership Awards" think otherwise.

The Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow (IIML) and J.K. Organisation, who have partnered to institute these awards, emphatically say that these awards are "an idea whose time has come".

"This is just not another award. The awards we are instituting are well conceived and well thought out. The objective is to recognise leadership. There has to be an element of leadership in the achievement of the winners. As we go into a liberalised environment, we have to make a distinction between leadership and management," Mr Harsh Pati Singhania, Director, J.K. Organisation, told newspersons here.

The leadership awards would comprise of trophy and citation (no cash) and would be given annually to an outstanding individual in each of the categories of business, science and technology and community service & social uplift. The nominations for the awards will be screened and recommended by advisory committees and then selected by a jury chaired by the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, Mr K.C. Pant.

According to Mr Devi Singh, Director, IIML, the leadership awards that have been instituted by IIML in partnership with J.K. Organisation, is "first of its kind" for IIML and plausibly for all management institutes in the country.

Asked as to why IIML chose to partner J.K. Organisation, Mr Singh said that IIML decided to choose between "the Tatas, the Birlas and J.K Organisation" for this tie-up. The interest and the commitment shown by the J.K. Organisation in instituting such an award swayed the decision in their favour, Mr Singh said.
