CORPORATES look for `outstanding' managers not `good' managers. Students should prepare themselves to be outstanding managers to become tomorrow's business leaders, said Mr C.K. Ranganathan, Chairman and Managing Director, CavinKare Pvt Ltd.
Speaking at Managemantra 2003, an event that brought together industry, academic institutions and students to know what each wants from the other, Mr Ranganathan said outstanding managers might not be experts in their respective fields. But, they have good judgment and rely on common sense. Every decision of theirs involves risk and they know when to stop looking beyond data. On the contrary, good managers constantly seek advice from others on decision-making and also wait for data.
A good manager only provides strategy for a company. However, an outstanding manager not only provides the strategy but also ensures that it is executed properly, he said. Like outstanding managers, think out of the box, he advised management students from about 40 colleges.
