Hyderabad , Dec. 23

BIOASIA 2004, a global bio-business forum and the inaugural annual biotech event of the Andhra Pradesh Government, will be held here from February 26. The three-day initiative will consist of a tradeshow, a conference, a business-to-business (B2B) forum and a knowledge pavilion.

Announcing this at a press conference here on Tuesday, the State Secretary for Industries, Mr B.P. Acharya, and the Chairman of the State Biotech Advisory Committee, Dr D. Balasubramanian, said that BioAsia would serve as an ideal platform for companies, governments, thought leaders and technologists from across the globe to transact business, build global alliances, showcase products and network with industry leaders, research scientists and media analysts.

They said that BioAsia would have over 100 exhibitors, 500 conference delegates, 70 internationally acclaimed speakers and 15,000 visitors from all over the world. Over 20 leading biotech countries would take part in the event. Out of the 70 confirmed speakers so far, 32 were from abroad. The prominent guests and speakers included Dr M.S. Swaminathan, Dr R.A. Mashelkar, Prof William Rutter and Dr Manju Sharma.

The main topics of the conference would be biotechnology in Asia, creative out partnering, vaccine industry in Asia, commercialisation of genetically modified organisms and building a successful biotech company in today's market place: vital role of venture capital funding.

On the other hand, the B2B forum at BioAsia is expected to focus on investment opportunities in the bio pharmaceutical industry in India. Venture capitalists, financial institutions and other investors are widely expected to participate in the forum. Delegations from Iowa, San Francisco, North Carolina, Israel, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand have already confirmed their participation.

Dr Balasubramanian said that those participating in the event included the Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand, Head of Genome Research Centre at Beijing and Shanghai, Chairman of the Thailand Biotechnology Centre and delegation from Sri Lanka. He was hopeful that new business deals would be struck across Asia during the event.
