THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The National Insurance Company has set up what it says is Kerala's first "Pravasi Insurance Cell" from where policy documents would be issued for emigrants going abroad for employment.

The compulsory insurance scheme for emigrants bound for foreign destinations came into force from Thursday, according to Mr M. P. Ramkumar, Senior Divisional Manager, National Insurance Company, Thiruvananthapuram. The insurance cell would remain open round-the-clock and policies could even be issued online.

The Pravasi Bharatiya Bima Yojana seeks to provide insurance cover of a minimum sum of Rs 2 lakh payable to the nominee/legal heir in the event of death or permanent disability of any Indian emigrant who goes abroad for employment purpose after obtaining emigration clearance from the concerned Protector of Emigrants.

The insurance policy shall be valid for a period of two years or the actual period of contract whichever is less. It shall also provide medical cover of a minimum of Rs 50,000 as cash-less hospitalisation and/or reimbursement of actual medical expenses of the insured emigrant workers on grounds of accidental injuries and/or sickness/ailments/diseases occurring during the period of insurance provided the medical treatment is taken in India.

Maternity benefits, subject to a minimum cover of Rs 20,000 in case of women emigrants will also be available, but re-imbursement restricted to actual expenses. Further details can be had from "The Pravasi Insurance Cell", National Insurance Co, Divisional Office, St Joseph's Press Building, 2nd Floor, Vazhuthacaud, Thiruvananthapuram-14.
