Cost-effective Vietnamese coal draws good response

Our Bureau

Kolkata , Dec. 26

VIETNAM has received fairly good response from a section of local coal consuming industries for its anthracite coal.

The response came during the " buyers and sellers" meet held here at the venue of 17th Industrial India Trade Fair, on Vietnamese products.

Senior officials of the ministry of trade of Vietnam participated the meet, organised by the Bengal National Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

Local bulk coal consumers are understood to have found Vietnamese coal more cost effective as compared with domestic coal because of its high calorific value and low sulphur content.

The development is encouraging for Vietnam as it have the opportunity to enter the Indian market with its coal. In fact, coal export has been a major foreign exchange earner for Vietnam.

Vietnam's anthracite coal deposits are found in Quang Ninh province in the North-East of the country.

The coalfield is estimated to have reserves of about 10 billion tonnes, located near seaports and important road junctions.

Moreover, a coal washing plant, storage yards and the loading port are located in the same place, thereby giving the country a huge advantage in exporting coal.

According to a senior Vietnamse official, anthracite coal has been known worldwide for hundreds of years under the trade name Hongai anthracite.

About 30 countries import this coal to use as fuel and material for production of steel, nickel, titanium, cement, calcium carbide, electrode, chemicals and power.

The official said that Vietnamese anthracite was exported through the specialised Campha seaport having a throughput of over four million tonnes per year.
