TN Govt urged to take steps to change cropping pattern

Our Correspondent

Madurai , Dec. 26

THE Cauvery Delta Farmers' Welfare Association has urged the State Government to initiate steps for the development of a cropping pattern suited to specific regions for ensuring optimum use of groundwater.

Mr S. Renganathan, General-Secretary of the association, said in Tiruchi recently that over the years there had been a shift in the cropping pattern in the region, irrespective of the locally available resources in terms of nutrient content and suitability of the soil. At least from next year, a comprehensive strategy for implementation of an alternative cropping pattern had to be evolved to ensure proper use of groundwater, he emphasised.

The meeting urged the Government to hold over the collection of land tax and postponement of the recovery of farm loans.
