Honeywell charts plan to consolidate operations

`If one were to bring in set templates and try to work up strategies based on those fixed models, they would not be able to grow the business.'

Hyderabad, Dec. 26

HONEYWELL International, a $25-billion conglomerate, is in the process of consolidating Indian operations in various technology areas, especially the security and firewall market, while planning to use the strengths of the Indian R& D centre.

Mr Ashwani Gupta, Managing Director of Honeywell International, who was in Hyderabad recently, told Business Line that the company wanted to chart out a strategy that seeks to build both the company's business as well as make the best of the Indian operations' strength.

Consultant McKinsey & Co is advising the company on strategy as well as growing Honeywell's firewall business, projected to go up to about $100 million in the next 2-3 years. The new focus on India was deemed necessary as existing models of development could not be implemented in the Indian context.

"If one were to bring in set templates and try to work up strategies based on those fixed models, they would not be able to grow the business," Mr Gupta said.

He added that a trial initiative would be in place shortly.

The company expects to grow to about 1,000 persons within the next 2-3 years.

It is a big challenge for a large corporation like Honeywell to work in a market with separate teams.

In many places, a group company is competing with another within the same group, according to Mr Gupta.

"This calls for a new strategy that will be able to bring together the group's synergies and tap the big market potential.Traditionally, Asia accounts for barely 5-7 per cent of the Honeywell business, but with new strategies and a growing market, we expect to see a larger business opportunity," he said.
