Power reforms

This is with reference to the editorial "Connecting right" (Business Line, December 27).

As pointed out by the editorial, the amendments made to the Electricity Act within six months of it being passed in Parliament are welcome. The Power Minister had promised to take care of many of the concerns about the Electricity Bill when it was being discussed in Parliament. And he has kept it.

The most significant aspect of the Act is in providing open access. Even in many developed countries this has been a problem, and one hopes that the Centre takes steps to prevent them from cropping up in India.

The reforms in the power sector show that it is possible to move ahead through consensus.

The same approach should be taken with regard to disinvestment too, especially the oil companies. The Centre should transparently discuss all issues with those who are likely to be affected by it. Only then will the economy and the country prosper.
