Thiruvananthapuram , Dec. 27

EXTENSION `cells' of the passport office will be established in eight district headquarters in the State from January 1, an official release said.

These units will be in addition to the existing passport cells in five districts.

The passport cells will be attached to the office of the Superintendent of Police in each of these districts.

This step is expected to reduce delay in issuing passports due to lags in the police verification process, the release added.

Besides, these units will also save people in these districts from having to travel very far to apply for their passports.

The districts scheduled to be covered by this scheme include Thrissur, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod.

According to the release, the Government has sanctioned a sum of approximately Rs 1.1 crore for purchase of equipment required in these eight offices.
