`Kerosene permit not cancelled for fishermen'

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Minister for Fisheries and Tourism, Mr K.V. Thomas, has dismissed as baseless recent reports that the kerosene permits for the boats of traditional fishermen have been cancelled.

According to an official release, the Minister said the State Government was only thinking about the possibility of reconsidering the issue of kerosene permits for engines that are over 10 years old. A final decision on this would, however, be taken only after the sub-committee of the policy formulation committee discussed the matter.

According to Mr Thomas, the State is not in a position to issue permits to new boats, as the Central Government is not increasing the State's quota, while also not allowing Kerala to import kerosene directly.
