Harvesting in spices continues

HARVESTING operations in ginger, turmeric, nutmeg, clove, cardamom and early maturing pepper continued during the last three days ending December 28. Rain or thundershowers occurred at isolated places in the State on December 27 and 28 while mainly dry weather prevailed on the 26th.

According to the Agromet Advisory Bulletin dated December 29 issued by the Met Office, Thiruvananthapuram, paddy crop had reached the panicle initiation stage. The fields saw water management and plant protection measures progress apace.

Mulching of coconut basins with green or dry leaves was also being continued with. The palms also saw spraying operations against mite infestation being undertaken.

Fruit trees were in the fruit setting stage while tapping was apace in the rubber plantations.

Advisory for next 4 days: Paddy fields should be watched for pests or diseases. In case stem borer infestation becomes severe, spraying of Phosphamidon at 0.5 ml/litre of water may be resorted to. In coconut gardens, however, wettable sulphur at 4 g/litre of water may be sprayed atop developing buttons to prevent a possible mite attack. Mulching with dry leaves could also be tried out.

Summary of weather: Rain or thundershowers and dry weather alternated as the northeast monsoon reached the last few days before its scheduled withdrawal time.

Chief amounts of rainfall in cm were:

December 27: Punalur-2 and Aryankavu-1

December 28: Alappuzha-5

Mean minimum temperature varied between 21 deg C and 24 deg C in various districts, with the lowest minimum of 20.4 deg C being recorded at Alappuzha on December 28.

The minimum temperature was 3 deg C below normal in Alappuzha on December 28. Mean relative humidity varied between 70 per cent and 87 per cent, mean cloud coverage between 2 okta and 5 okta and mean wind speed, 2 kmph and 8 kmph.

Forecast until December 31 spoke about rain or thundershower episodes at isolated places in all districts. No significant change in outlook was indicated for the two subsequent days.
