THE State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL), which became the largest cellular services provider in Andhra Pradesh with a subscriber base of 5.3 lakh users, has drawn up plans to expand its CellOne coverage further to 66 new towns and expects to shortly launch General Package Radio Service (GPRS).

The GPRS service will provide more enriching cellular telephony. This will be backed by a 895 route kilometres of additional OFC (Optical Fibre Cable) network.

Explaining the plans of BSNL to the Union Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology, Mr Ashok Pradhan, on Monday, the Chief General Manager of AP Telecom, Mr Sanjaya Kumar, said a broadband network with optical fibre cable backbone was being created. The service is presently offered at Hyderabad for corporate customers and software companies.

Similar networks are being planned for other cities in the State at Visakhapatnam, Vijaywada and GunturBSNL has recently created an IN (intelligent network) platform in partnership with Alcatel for mass calling facility. These services are likely to be rolled out over the next three months.

As a part of its new services, BSNL plans to line up a host of innovative services such as distance education, video on demand, Internet TV on telephone lines, e-commerce and Internet Protocol (IP) Video Telephony.

These are planned to be extended to the fixed line customers on the existing network in collaboration with various content providers.

BSNL has become the number one cellular services provider in the State having a subscriber base of 5.3 lakh, which includes 3.7 lakh pre-paid users and 1.6 lakh post- paid subscribers.

Citing a recent TRAI observation, Mr Kumar said that the metering and billing credibility of BSNL was best amongst all the telecom service providers in the State.

The call centre facility launched earlier this year for both fixed lines and cellular subscribers was able to service them across the State.
