Kerala Minister asks media to spread green message

Our Bureau

Thiruvananthapuram , Dec. 30

THE media should play an active role in creating awareness about the need to ensure sustainable development, the State Minister for Information and Parliamentary Affairs, Mr M.M. Hassan, said.

He made this observation while inaugurating a workshop organised by the Kerala Forest Department on `The role of the media in people friendly forestry practices for a clean environment' in the city.

The media, said Mr Hassan, plays a pivotal role in ensuring that the general public understands that destroying the environment is a social evil.

Similarly, the media can also help create popular support for initiatives targeted at protecting the environment, particularly forests, he added.

The two-day workshop has been specially designed to give the media an insight into the issues that need to be kept in mind while covering issues related to the environment and forests.

Themes that will be covered at the meeting include the history of the Kerala Forest Department, various initiatives introduced by the forest department, eco tourism etc.

Among those who addressed the inaugural session were Mr P.K. Surendranathan Asari, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Chief Wildlife Warden, Kerala, Mr K.P. Mohanan, Managing Editor, Asianet, and Mr K.L. Sreekrishnadas, Director, Public Relations-Press Information Bureau, Government of India.
