Foreign Trade Industrial India Trade Fair ends Call for more economic support among S-E Asian countries Our Bureau
Kolkata , Dec. 30 THE 12-day-long 17th Industrial India Trade Fair ended here on Tuesday, with a call for more closer economic cooperation among the South-East Asian countries. It is viewed that such cooperation will be beneficial for all countries in the Asian sub-continent under the fully-effective WTO regime from the mid 2005. This year's trade fair, jointly organised by the Bengal National Chamber of Commerce & Industry, the West Bengal Government and the India Trade Promotion Organisation, has been able to sell or book goods worth of about Rs 74 crore and recorded trade enquiries worth of about Rs 135 crore and attracted over eight lakh visitors. The Socialist Republic of Vietnam participated the fair in an impressive manner as the partner country. Speaking at the closing ceremony, the West Bengal Minister for Industry and Commerce, Mr Nirupam Sen, said that the State Government was prepared to take all possible measures to increase export-import trade from the city with the other South-East Asian countries. Disturbed by the manner in which, the number of unemployed persons were increasing in the eastern region, particularly in West Bengal, he said that his department was keen to help local entrepreneurs promote handicraft and cottage industries, which have potential to create. Mr Somnath Chatterjee, MP and Chairman of West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation (WBIDC), said, "West Bengal is the most happening State in the country so far as fresh investment is concerned." He advised local young people to have confidence to become self-employed rather than sticking to the old mindset as job seeker. Mr Chatterjee said social tension was developing in the entire eastern regional States because of the imbalance in economic development by the Centre. Since unemployment had become the main problem in this region, he suggested that immediate steps be taken to set up more and more labour intensive industries in the State.
