Workshop for training process plant industry

G. Chandrashekhar

Mumbai , Dec. 30

IN promoting their exports to Europe, industrial manufacturers in developing countries face technical barriers to trade (TBT) in the form of requirement of CE marking for products imported in Europe as well as inadequate knowledge of harmonised European norms.

It is also known that for European companies establishing projects abroad, European EPC contractors and consultants would insist on European standards for all the procurements done or recommended by them.

In order to overcome the challenge posed by such entry barriers and to familiarise the industry in India with European norms to retain export worthiness of their products — not only to Europe but also to other markets such as Middle East and Africa — , a workshop on CE marking and technical barriers to trade is being organised in different parts of the country during February 2004.

CE marking is the European Seal of Conformity declaration by manufacturers or importers that the product fulfils the essential demands and has passed through prescribed module for competence. Many countries are likely to adopt the EU norms in future as the norms are in conformity with WTO and are readily available.

The Process Plant and Machinery Association of India (PPMAI) in partnership with the CBI (Rotterdam-based Centre for Promotion of Imports from Developing Countries) is scheduled to hold workshops in Mumbai (February 2-3); Vadodara (Feb 5-6); New Delhi (Feb 9-10) and Chennai (Feb 12-13) to familiarise the Indian industry with CE marking and TBT.

According to PPMAI, the objectives of the workshop include development of a cooperative for shared services, training small and medium enterprises to reduce costs of testing and certification, and evolution of best practices.

As a first step, a pool of trained consultants capable of providing correct guidance to the industry at affordable cost is to be formed.
