Letters Asean ties
This is with reference to "Asean ties: India must look to the East with greater vision" (Business Line, December 31). The basic idea of the "Look-East" policy is the realisation in India that South East Asia is emerging as the fulcrum of development in the world. India's growing relations with the Asean countries and the BIMSTEC forum are, indeed, beginning to free it from the straitjacket imposed by the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). At the same time, the importance of India's role in developing SAARC cannot be brushed aside completely. Once Indo-Asean ties are strengthened, it may be useful to focus on Asean-SAARC ties, both politically and economically. Importantly, many of the SAARC countries are eager to foster better relations with the Asean nations rather than with other members of SAARC. C. Ramesh Keeramangalam (TN)
