Thiruvananthapuram , Dec. 31

THE Pravasi Insurance Cell opened here by the National Insurance Company has met with overwhelming response from customers within Kerala and abroad prompting the company to think of replicating the service at divisional offices in all the districts of the State.

According to Mr M.P. Ramkumar, Senior Divisional Manger, National Insurance, Thiruvananthapuram, the district-level Pravasi Insurance Cells would immediately go on stream.

More than 2,000 customers have used the services of the cell operating from the Thiruvananthapuram Divisional Office during the last five days. More than 600 policies have already been sold.

"We are receiving a number of telephone calls and e-mail messages from various parts of Kerala and even abroad, especially from Gulf countries," Mr Ramkumar said. National Insurance Company has used the service of travel agents to reach out to prospective customers. The cell was formed to serve exclusively those carrying an employment visa and intending to go abroad and who must get the compulsory insurance coverage mandated by Government of India regulations.

Those visiting countries abroad for business and holiday can also avail of the overseas medi-claim insurance from National Insurance, Mr Ramkumar added. Further details could be had from: "The Pravasi Insurance Cell," National Insurance Company, St Joseph's Press Building, Thiruvananthapuram-14. Phone: 0471-230442 and 2324729. Meanwhile, ROOTS-NRK Initiative, a company promoted by the State Government, has announced that it would open a second Pravasi Bharatiya Bima Yojana counter at Ernakulam.

According to Mr Satish Nambudiripad, Chief Executive, the decision was taken because, besides Thiruvananthapuram, the Protector of Emigrants had an office in Ernakulam too. Applicants for emigration clearance from the northern districts would benefit from the new counter being set up in Ernakulam. The counter will temporarily operate from the Kochi regional office of the United India Insurance, which is the corporate agency for ROOTS.

The Thiruvananthapuram headquarters of ROOTS has already set up the counter for the insurance policy for emigrants. Those availing the ROOTS would be given free membership of the NORKA (Department of Non-Resident Keralite Affairs) Welfare Fund, Mr Nambudiripad said. They would also be entitled for the various welfare/rehabilitation schemes announced by NORKA/ROOTS subject to their meeting required qualifications, he added.
