Banks in Dakshina Kannada register Rs 8,100-cr business

BANKING business in Dakshina Kannada district, which has 332 branches, crossed Rs 8,100 crore as on September. These branches collected deposits worth Rs 5,574 crore and advanced Rs 2,534 crore in the first half of the current financial year.

According to the Regional Manager of Syndicate Bank, Mr B.K. Bhat, the banks in the district have lent Rs 1,358 crore to priority sector, constituting 54 per cent of the total advances.

Addressing the District Consultative Committee Meeting for Banking Development here on Tuesday, Mr Bhat stated that nearly Rs 360 crore has been lent to farm sector.

Banks in the district recorded a growth of 14 per cent in deposits and 17 per cent in advances till September 2003 compared to the corresponding period in the previous financial year.

Referring to the implementation of annual credit plan for 2003-04, he stated that Rs 549 crore was disbursed in the first six months of the current financial year. The plan document to the district is to the tune of Rs 951.36 crore. Kissan credit cards worth Rs 156 crore have been issued to 40,174 farmers in the district.

Of the 17,596 self-help groups (SHGs), 10,138 have been credit-linked by the banks. Though the district was given a target of credit-linking 3,250 SHGs for the current fiscal, 3,332 were credit-linked in the first six months itself.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat, Mr H.G. Shivananda Murthy, who presided over the meeting, stated that 850 Stree-Shakti SHGs were credit-linked as on September, against the target of credit linking 1,049 groups for the current financial year.

Mr U.V. Kulkarni, Assistant General Manager of RBI, and Dr Venugopal Arkeri, Assistant General Manager of Nabard, attended the meeting. Mr G. Anantaram, Lead District Manager, proposed a vote of thanks.
