Madurai , Jan 1

THE Coir Board has plans to set a model coir village at Tenkasi in the Virudhunagar district. According to sources in the Coir Board, the Tenkasi project is one among the 10 to be established at various places in the country.

The sources said the coir industry provided maximum employment to women, who accounted nearly 70 per cent of the workforce. It also prevented the migration of the uneducated unemployed in the rural area.

The sources further said that there has good demand for coir pith abroad and Pollachi manufactures recently exported 12,500 tonnes of coir pith to the US.
