Shipping Mangalore port creates traffic record in Dec Our Bureau
Mangalore , Jan.1 NEW Mangalore Port handled record traffic of 24.88- lakh tonnes during December. With this, the port surpassed the earlier record of 24.63-lakh tonnes handled during October this year. Apart from this, the port has surpassed several previous records in the first nine months of the current financial year. During this period, the port handled 18.4 million tonnes of traffic against 16.12 million tonnes during the corresponding period of the previous year, recording a growth rate of 14.28 per cent. The port authorities are hopeful of achieving an all-time record throughput by the end of the current financial year. The port has also made remarkable achievements in handling iron ore fines/lumps in a single day. On December 26, it handled 23,314 tonnes of iron ore fines/lumps by crossing the earlier record of 22,148 tonnes handled on December 14. MV Sea Sparkle called at the port on December 26 and loaded 34,500 tonnes of iron ore fines and left the port for China on December 27. Hassan Hajee & Sons are the stevedores and C&F agents and Mineral Enterprises, Bangalore, is the exporter.
