Social Welfare `Private institutions' role must in social welfare programmes' Our Bureau
Mangalore , Jan 1 THE Chairman and Managing Director of Corporation Bank, Mr K. Cherian Varghese, has stressed the need for private institutions' participation in the social welfare programmes of the Government. Speaking after handing over 100 pressure cookers to the district administration for distribution under Akshara Dasoha scheme of the State Government, he termed it as a good scheme for the welfare of poor school children. Reiterating the commitment of the bank to the people of the district, he stated that the bank is concerned about the well being of children. Akshara Dasoha is a project launched by the Karnataka Government to increase the attendance level in schools. Students are provided with mid-day meal and reading and writing materials under the scheme. Corporation Bank has donated pressure cookers to 100 Government schools in Mangalore Sub-division of Dakshina Kannada District, comprising Bantwal, Vittal, Mulki, Moodbidri, Ullal, and Surathkal Assembly constituencies. The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Arvind Srivastava, who received cookers on behalf of the district administration from Mr Varghese, thanked the bank for its gesture and sought cooperation from it in similar projects in future. The district in-charge minister, Mr B. Ramanatha Rai, presided over the function. Mr S.A. Prabhakara Sharma, Assistant Commissioner, Mangalore, who welcomed the gathering, gave an outline of Akshara Dasoha. Quoting statistics, he stated that attendance in government schools in the State has considerably gone up after the introduction of the project. Mr P.K. Gupta, Executive Director of the bank, Mr M.V. Nair, General Manager, Mr B.R. Bhat, Deputy General Manager, Mr K. Diwakar, Mangalore Mayor, Mr Yogish Bhat, MLA, and Mr Blasius D'Souza, MLC, were present.
