Non-Performing Assets UBI plans to trim NPAs by Rs 200 cr Our Bureau
Kolkata , Jan. 1 UNITED Bank of India hopes to record advances of around Rs 9,000 crore, while its deposits are expected to stand at about Rs 23,000 crore by the end of the current fiscal. It also hopes to record a significant reduction in NPAs by the year-end. UBI has recently managed to address some of its hardest NPA-related issues, said Mr Madhukar, CMD, adding that these included a few major cases, some of them dating back 15 years. By March 2004, the bank expects to notch a reduction of Rs 200 crore in NPAs, thanks to a series of recovery efforts. In fact, a special recovery campaign is currently in place. UBI has lined up a debit card, its first initiative towards this direction. This is likely to be launched in the first week of February. On another front, the bank is working on tie-ups with various government organisations for extending housing loans to their employees. Already, a tie-up with the Kolkata Police has materialised. Also on the cards are new branches, for which the bank board has granted its approval. One such branch is expected to come up at Noida near Delhi. The bank on Thursday introduced its 24-hour helpline under the brand `United Grahak Seva'. This, the CMD said, will be a toll-free line, one that may be used to contact the head office for information on various services and products. Meanwhile, UBI has claimed that one of its officers' associations has taken its own steps on customer care. "This is a significant effort by a trade union," Mr Madhukar noted.
