BSNL's new scheme for Internet buffs

Our Correspondent

Madurai , Jan. 4

BHARAT Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has come out with a browser-friendly package for Internet buffs. The new scheme not only cuts down the telephone bills but also gives round-the-clock Internet facility without any additional charges.

According to the General Manager, Mr K. Subbiah, BSNL has offered existing subscribers an exclusive line for Internet usage at a monthly rental of Rs 399 (in exchanges with less than one lakh lines) and Rs 499 (in exchanges with more than one lakh lines). However, no outgoing calls could be made through the new connection, for which no installation charge would be collected.

Under the new scheme the subscribers will have the liberty of making outgoing calls or receiving incoming calls even as they browse on the computer.

One-hour of browsing (during day time) every day would cost the subscribers Rs 400 per month. The scheme provides the luxury of an exclusive line, apart from saving money. However, the scheme is open only for individual subscribers and not for commercial utility, he said.

He further said that the scheme aimed at keeping the BSNL's B-Fone (landline) subscribers' base intact, fighting not only against the private players, but the competition from within in the form of mobile phones, both GSM and WLL phones.

As many as 8,000 landlines have been surrendered in the last eight months in the Madurai Secondary Switching Area, comprising Madurai, Dindigul and Theni districts. However, BSNL has added more than 30,000 new mobile-subscribers.
