Cotton cultivation picking up in Ramanathapuram dist

Our Correspondent

MADURAI: More paddy farmers are turning into cotton growers in the Ramanathapuram district, near here.

According to the District Collector, Mr S.Vijayakumar, while paddy cultivation has never been a viable proposition in the district, this year, the administration had to disburse Rs 13 crore by way of relief to farmers. A new variety of cotton, Suba, was introduced that yielded more and suited ginning with a longer staple. The Appachi Cottons, Pollachi stepped in to guide the farmers and new technologies were also introduced. With the introduction of Suba variety, the crop yielded no less than 40 bolls instead of the normal 10 to 12 bolls, enabling the farmers fetch a higher price, currently, at Rs 28 per kg. The Appachi Cottons has agreed to buy cotton from farmers and entered into the memorandum of understanding to pay a floor price of Rs 18 per kg, even if market prices slumped downward.

With this success, the collector is hopeful of more farmers shifting to cotton in the district.
