Transport strike today in Kerala

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Passenger and commercial vehicle services in the State will be hit on Tuesday as motor workers belonging to various trade unions propose to go on 12-hour strike to protest frequent hikes in petroleum fuel prices.

Buses, lorries, taxies and autorickshaws will keep off the roads for most part of the day, according to the Joint Action Council representing various trade unions such as the CITU, AITUC, INTUC, BMS, HMS and STUC. Private vehicles would be allowed to operate.

Meanwhile, the Transport Minister, Mr R. Balakrishna Pillai, urged the unions to desist from the move to strike in view of the peaking Sabarimalai temple festival season. The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) would operate limited services in those routes cleared by the police, he added.

The Government had received the K.V. Raveendran Nair Commission report on the problems being faced by the transport sector. The report would be submitted to the Cabinet, which would take a decision on the recommendations made, the Minister added.
