Shipping NPCIL's captive jetty at Koodankulam to be commissioned soon Our Bureau
Kolkata , Jan. 6 NUCLEAR Power Corporation of India Ltd's captive jetty at Koodankulam in Tamil Nadu, about 180 km from Tuticorin, is to be commissioned shortly, probably next week. Built at a cost of about Rs 5 crore, the jetty is to handle imported equipment and heavy machinery for NPCIL's project being set up there. The mock trial of the jetty by Tamil Nadu Maritime Board is to take place within a day or two. There being limited draught right in front of the jetty, the ships bringing in equipment will have to be berthed in the sea, a couple of kilometres away from the shore, and the distance will be covered by barges. At the time of commissioning, the vessel, `Katja', will unload about 1,000 tonnes of equipment in the barges away from the jetty. The barges then will transport the equipment to the jetty for onward movement by road covering small distance. Till now, the imported equipment, weighing about 42,000 tonnes in several packages, for the project was handled at Tuticorin port. The first ship carrying equipment for the project left St Petersburg in end-April last year to arrive at Tuticorin in end-May. An estimated total of 2,50,000 tonnes of equipment will be imported till 2006.
