Spices & Condiments Cardamom prices rule steady G.K. Nair
Kochi , Jan. 6 CARDAMOM prices ruled steady on good buying support at the major auction centres in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Prices of graded varieties on Tuesday were AGEB Rs 450 - Rs 460, AGB Rs 325 - Rs 335, AGS Rs 305 - Rs 315 and AGS 1 Rs 280 - Rs 290 per kg. The market continued to remain steady with marginal fluctuations, sources in Bodinayakannur in Tamil Nadu and Kumily in Kerala told Business Line. Of late, there had been a decline in arrivals. Thin arrivals are said to have forced the auction centre at Pulianmala in Kerala's Idukki district to suspend auctions temporarily and the arrivals meant for this centre was being diverted to other nearby auction centres. Some internal problems had also led to the stoppage of auctions, the sources said. Arrivals of superior grade 8 mm bold had been thin, as the prices offered for it had been below the normal rates. This variety, which used to fetch over Rs 600 a kg, was offered at Rs 550 - Rs 560 a kg. Almost 90 per cent of the arrivals had been sold out, as the traders were active in buying at the prevailing prices. On the other hand, the arrivals could be narrowing down in the coming weeks as certain growing areas were experiencing a dry spell. Exports in November were estimated at 75 tonnes and in December also, they were likely to be maintained at that level.
