Cabinet to take up Unorganised Sector Workers' Bill today

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Jan. 6

THE Unorganised Sector Workers Bill 2003, aimed at providing social security cover to the approximately 37-crore workers engaged in the unorganised sector, will be taken up by the Union Cabinet for consideration on Wednesday. This was stated by the Union Labour Minister, Mr Sahib Singh Verma, here on Tuesday.

The Bill, among other things, seeks to provide universal health insurance cover to each worker employed in the unorganised sector and his immediate family members along with old-age pension. The Bill also includes a provision for setting up a Central Unorganised Sector Worker's Welfare Board comprising representatives of non-government organisations, unorganised sector employers, unorganised sector workers and bureaucrats.

Earlier, in the first week of November 2003, the Cabinet had sent back the Bill to the Labour Ministry seeking modifications in the funding mechanism for providing financial benefits to the unorganised sector workers.
