Steve won't say Waugh MRF for long

Chennai , Jan. 6

THE end of the international career of Steve Waugh, the celebrated Australian cricketer, may also see the end of his sporting endorsements in India.

MRF, which roped in Waugh for a series of commercials and for the logo emblazoned on his bat, will not be renewing his contract that runs out in October.

A spokesman said that the company was waiting to take a decision on Waugh's contract after the Test series.

"There is scope for renegotiation, but we may continue the contract till the period ends in October," he added.

The contract clearly specifies that MRF would sponsor Waugh as long as he plays for Australia. It continued with the contract even after Waugh was dropped from the one-day squad for the World Cup in early 2003.

During the tournament, the company had roped in Brian Lara as brand endorser although it had then denied that signing the West Indian cricketer had anything to do with Waugh's absence from the World Cup.

Master blaster Sachin Tendulkar was the original brand endorser before the others were signed on.

However, given Waugh's legendary status in India, MRF could well use him for public appearances and new commercials till his contract ends later this year.

"He will have more visits to India and he will also have more time," the official said.

The company had brought in Lara, Waugh and Tendulkar for a go-karting commercial. Yet another new commercial featuring Waugh will be released soon.

AMP Sanmar Assurance Company, which had signed up Waugh as brand ambassador two years back in a three-year deal, will continue the current relationship, a company source said.

"In fact, now that he's retired, Waugh will be able to spend more time endorsing the company's insurance products. We chose Steve because he is more than just a cricketing icon, and because of the respect he commands in India due to the non-cricketing ties he has with the country," the source said, implying that Waugh's retirement will have no impact on the campaign featuring him.

He also said that it was too early to say whether the contract with Waugh would be extended when it comes up for renewal next year.

The company, which is a joint venture between AMP of Australia and the Sanmar group, also believes the qualities that Steve Waugh has come to be associated with over the years — trust and one who is capable of playing a long innings — are vital for an insurance company such as itself.
