Peace process

This is with reference to the editorial "The great thaw" (Business Line, January 7). It rightly points out that much of the credit for the present thaw in Indo-Pak relations should go to Mr Vajpayee, who even disregarded the `detractors' within his own party.

The added confidence on account of the BJP victory in the Hindi heartland and the improved situation on the economic front might have influenced Mr Vajpayee to renew his earlier offers of peace to Pakistan. While Gen Musharraf does not have Mr Vajpayee's freedom, mounting international pressure persuaded him to respond to the Indian offer.

The talks scheduled for February 2004 may bring some good results provided Pakistan softens its adamant stand on Kashmir. Gen Musharraf should reconcile to the fact that the majority of Pakistanis and Indians wish for long lasting friendship and open borders.
