Dairy & Dairy Products Better milk quality urged Our Bureau
KOCHI: The Central Committee of the People's Dairy Development Project (PDDP) has urged the Government to make necessary amendments to the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act introduced about half a century ago. The PDDP Chairman, Fr Paul Madan, said that fat content (3.5 per cent) and SNF (solids-not-fat) in cow milk was fixed in the PFA Act of 1952 on the base of cow milk collected from local breeds. Now most of the farmers have high yielding varieties of cows, the milk of which does not have the stipulated percentage level. Under these circumstances, the Government should reconsider the norms reduce the SNF to at least 8.1 per cent. It was not proper for the Government to feign ignorance about the milk supplied from other states, which do not maintain the required quality. The Government should introduce schemes to promote dairy farmers to enhance the production of milk to meet the demand, he said.
