Alternative Medicines Dacca Oushadhalay makes a comeback Our Bureau
Kolkata , Jan. 7 THE 117-year old ayurvedic pharmaceuticals company, Dacca Oushadhalay, one of the few domestic pioneers in the field, is making a comeback after going out of business roughly 15 years ago. The new promoter and managing director, Mr S.N. Ghosh, announced here today that the company was returning to business in a new avatar with R&D support from Jadavpur University's department of pharmaceuticals. Mr Ghosh told reporters that the company has seen an investment of Rs 12 crore in the last couple of years following management changeover. Mr Ghosh and his associates now hold over 80 per cent of the company's stake. It has obtained the first patent for its ayurvedic product for non-insulin dependent diabetics. It is also in the process of patenting eight more products in research collaboration with the Jadavpur University. The collaborative effort with the university extends to joint product development, clinical trials, validation and patenting. The company is also utilising the university's help in filing application for international patents. In arrangement with the industry-institution partnership cell of the Jadavpur University, the company is also exploring the possibility of exports of some of its products to Brazil. The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof Ashok Basu, informed that the university is assisting the Brazil Government in training and creating a healthy face-off between the research organisations and industry. Dacca Oushadalay has planned to prune its portfolio of products to just 32 from its earlier basket of over 200 items and make further research before marketing them. It had large clientele in the eastern, northern and the north-eastern region. Currently, it is running two manufacturing plants in West Bengal.
